JOÃO JOSÉ COSTA

João José Costa (Parnaíba, PI, Brazil 1931 – ). A student in Ivan Serpa's painting course and Aluísio Magalhães' and Alexandre Wollner's graphic arts course at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, João participated in the Abstract Art Exhibit held at the Hotel Quitandinha in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, in 1953; in the four exhibitions of the Grupo Frente [Front Group]; in the III, VI, VII and IX International Biennials in São Paulo; in the National Exhibition of Concrete Art held at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo in 1956; in the National Salon of Modern Art in 1956, 1960 and 1969; in the Modern Art in Brazil exhibition held in Buenos Aires and Rosário (Argentina), Lima (Peru) and Santiago (Chile) in 1957; and in the retrospective and commemorative shows of the Grupo Frente and of Brazilian concrete art in recent decades. His work appears in important private and institutional collections. In 2011, he had an individual show at Gustavo Rebello Arte, where a book on his work was launched: Entreinterposto: pintura e geometria na obra de João José Costa [BetweenInterPlaced: painting and geometry in the work of João José Costa] was published by Luiz Eduardo Meira de Vasconcellos (Rio de Janeiro: Contra Capa Editora, 2011). He lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
